The Glyph Blackbox PRO 12TB USB-C 3.2 7200 RPM Enterprise Class Desktop Hard Drive (model BBPR12000ENT) stores 12TB on an enterprise-class 7,200 RPM drive inside a rugged aluminum and silicone enclosure, and connects to your computer over USB-C.
Glyph builds the Blackbox PRO for backups and quick access to photos, video, and music. It uses a USB-C 3.2 port that also works with USB 3.0, USB 3.1, and Thunderbolt 3 ports, and it runs from an external power adapter rather than from the host port.
The drive ships formatted for macOS and works with Time Machine out of the box. You can reformat it for Windows. The aluminum shell acts as a heatsink, so the drive cools without a fan.
Glyph Blackbox PRO 12TB Features
- 12TB enterprise-class capacity. The BBPR12000ENT holds 12TB on a 7,200 RPM enterprise-class hard drive, which gives editors and DITs one large volume for camera originals, proxies, and project archives instead of a stack of smaller portable drives.
- USB-C 3.2 connection. The USB-C 3.2 port runs at up to 280 MB/s in Glyph's full specifications list, and Glyph's feature text quotes 260 MB/s. Real throughput depends on your computer, cable, and file sizes, so large sequential video files see the best results.
- Works with USB 3.0, USB 3.1, and Thunderbolt 3 ports. Glyph lists compatibility with all three, so the drive plugs into most current Mac and Windows computers. Two cables are included, USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A, which covers both newer laptops and older desktop ports.
- Rugged aluminum and silicone enclosure. The aluminum body is wrapped with a removable rugged silicone cover for protection from bumps on set and in transit. Take the cover off for desktop use, or leave it on when the drive travels between edit bays and location shoots.
- Fanless heatsink cooling. The aluminum shell dissipates heat from the drive without a fan, which keeps the drive silent in a studio, edit suite, or control room. Glyph states that this design helps the drive hold its speed during long transfers and sustained reads.
- External power adapter. The Blackbox PRO runs from its own external power adapter, so the drive does not draw power through the USB-C port. That suits a desk setup next to a workstation, but it means you need an outlet nearby and it is not a bus-powered drive.
- macOS ready with Time Machine. The drive arrives formatted for macOS, so you can point Time Machine at it and start backing up immediately. For Windows, Glyph supplies a formatting guide, and the drive works after you reformat it.
- 3-2-1 warranty. Glyph covers the drive with three years of full hardware coverage including cables, two years of Level-1 data recovery, and one year of advance replacement. That level of coverage matters when the drive holds client footage and project masters.
