An optical cable can vary greatly in quality. We know because we've tested dozens of them, including the famous Frankenstein optical audio cables. We have both RCA coax and optical cables that are DTS and Dolby Digital compliant.
There are several cheap digital audio cables on the market available that have low quality connectors that are not DTS and Dolby Digital compatible.
Our optical cables are made out of a single strand of either glass or plastic that has a finely polished exterior. Light applied at one end naturally follows the direction of the strand to appear at nearly full strength at the other end. It is therefore not subject to EMI/RFI interference and is incapable of creating a ground loop. Low-resolution Toslink is adequate to carry compressed Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks, while Hi-band ST format Digital Audio can carry high-resolution DSD and SACD, as well as HDTV video when used in groups of four cables.
Toslink is an optical interface using a plastic fiber optic cable and the Sony/Philips Toslink Red Diode transmitter/receiver software combination. It consists of plastic grip connector that snaps into place at the component ends of the fiber optic cable, providing an approximately tight optical link that introduces a high degree of jitter (time based uncertainty) due to its simple design. Originally used for digital two-channel audio in the ‘80s, it is now a commonplace connection for DVD players, computers and video game systems that feature Dolby Digital and DTS Surround Sound. Seen initially as an ideal non-electrical connection method, it has since been refined by the use of jitter-reducing circuits at the receiver end called FIFO – (First In First Out), which re-clocks the incoming jittery signal to produce a clean version of the digital source.
Some of the below digital optical cables have been tested and are compliant with the following standards:
- Dolby Digital
- Dolby Digital Plus
- Dolby TrueHD (2 CH)
- DTS
- DTS HD
The equipment you connect to this cable, though, must be capable of decoding these audio protocols.
Our optical cable has been tested so assure you that the digital audio cable does not impact the audio signal. Before we ship an optical cable it is tested from 1-Hertz to 25 KHz and the below test documentation given to you.
- Audio frequency response from 1 Hz up to 50-KHz +-___ db
- Total optical cable inspection ____ Pass, ____ Fail
- Dolby Digital Audio Compliancy ____ Pass, ____ Fail
- DTS Audio Compliancy ____ Pass, ____ Fail
If the optical audio cable can't pass a 30 KHz or 50 KHz sweep test signal with absolutely NO degradation it is discarded. That's right; every optical cable you get from us is tested for all of its electrical characteristics before we ship it to you.
