When it comes to watching full high-definition video content on a television or other device, there are only a few different cable connection options available to you. Two of these options is HDMI, or high-definition multimedia interface, and SDI, or serial digital interface. Both of these connection options are available to different devices, but generally speaking the two options are not found on the same hardware. Due to this, if you have an HDMI based high-definition audio and video feed but need to hook it up to an HD-SDI device, the only method you have available to you is through an HDMI to SDI adapter. This adapter is able to take the audio and video feed and convert it over to a feed the SDI cable understands. From here, there information is then sent to the new device, allowing you to connect an HDMI and HD-SDI based equipment together.

To start, the HDMI cable must plug into the HDMI port on the television or other device you want to send the video and audio signals from. The opposite end of the cable fits into the HDMI port on the adapter. With the cable now secure the SDI cable screws into the SDI port on the adapter. SDI cables are coaxial cables and usually screw onto the port in order to secure the connection. Once secure connect the other end of the cable into the SDI port on the device you want to send the audio and video feed into. With everything connected you can now power on the equipment and wait for the hardware to start up. On the SDI device you might have to select the SDI option as the input, but once you do the audio and video feed should now begin to run through the original hardware and onto the new device.

There are times where you need to fit a square peg into a round hole, such as an HDMI device into an SDI device. Directly, this is not possible, but if you utilize the assistance of an adapter, this is possible and doesn't take all that long to do.

HDMI can be problematic for long HDMI cable runs and using our HDMI to HD-SDI Converter you can convert HDMI to HD-SDI and take advantage of the high quality video signals and save money that SDI cables offer. The HDMI to HD-SDI Converter even embeds the audio from HDMI into the SDI signal so only one single coax cable can be used.

Many HDMI to HD-SDI Converters on the market only output a 1080i signal but our converter can pass-through a full 1080p signal to be sent to a 1080p SDI switch or display. The HDMI to HD-SDI Converter supports all HDMI devices like a Blu-ray, set top box, AppleTV, etc. with 2 channel or 7.1 channel LPCM audio.

NOTE: This HDMI to HD-SDI Converter does not support HDMI 480p & 576p resolution (no such resolution in SDI spec) and the HD-SDI output resolution and frequency must be the same as HDMI input or you won't get a picture. This HDMI to HD-SDI Converter is not a scaler but only a converter. This means that the resolution of the incoming HDMI video signal is the same as the HD-SDI output signal and the input of the display MUST MATCH the source HDMI resolution for optimum picture quality. You may need to change the resolution in the source devices (like a camera) MENU. If you don't match them you may not get a picture.

A:
Using the ikam VX7i 7" HD/3G-SDI LCD Monitor we have tested the GOPRO HERO3, Nikon Coolpix P7000, Nikon D3100, Nikon D90, Canon 7D and the Canon 5D Mark iii and they all work flawlessly. It also works with the Canon HV20 camcorder as well as all the devices in the COMPATIBILITY TAB to the left.

Q: What do you recommend for the best cable for this HDMI to HD-SDI Converter?
A:
Start with good cabling. To send HD video you must use a coaxial cable with Bandwidth at least 1.5G and to send Full HD video must use coaxial cable with bandwidth at least 3G. The link cable recommended to use a high quality Coaxial Cable & BNC connector if you use a low quality coaxial cable it may case signal loss and affect the transmission distance and reliability.

BNC coax cables and connectors are not all made to the same standard. From the thickness and grade of the center conductor to the type of dielectric, all these factors contribute to impedance, attenuation and Return Loss. Serial Digital Video coax like Belden 1694A or Canare L5CFB are good examples of broadcast quality SDI cable. A 75 Ohm impedance must be maintained throughout the HDMI to HD-SDI Converter signal or cable path including BNC connectors etc.

Here is a distance and cable type guide that can be used with this converter: Recommended Transmission Distances.
